How to Transfer To Dell Laptop From HP, Lenovo or another Dell (Files, Programs, Accounts, And Everything Else)

Got a new Dell laptop, and need to transfer everything to it from your old laptop – such as HP, Lenovo or another Dell? This article will show you how to do that quickly and easily – keeping your programs, profiles, accounts, passwords, settings, documents, pictures, music, movies, favorites, and all of your files.

This works for any Dell model, such as Dell Latitude, Dell XPS, Alienware, Dell Inspiron, or Dell G Series. You can transfer from any other vendor to your new Dell, for example transfer from HP to Dell, transfer from Lenovo to Dell, from Dell to another Dell – or any other manufacturer. This even works if you are moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11, or from desktop to laptop. No matter what, you still get to keep all of your stuff and transfer everything to your Dell new laptop.

This tutorial is covers transfer to a new Dell. If your new computer is not a Dell, check out our guides for Transfer to new HP, Transfer to new Lenovo, or a general guide for Transfer to New Computer.

While neither Dell nor Microsoft provide tools to perform this kind of transfer, these tools do exist – and these days, they are extremely simple to use and effective in terms of their ability to transfer apps and files. There is simply no more need to spend days manually copying data, setting up accounts, reinstalling applications and trying to remember your passwords and configurations. This is all done for you, as this tutorial will show.

There are 3 parts that are important to the transfer:

  • Files, such documents, pictures, music, pictures and emails
  • Settings, such as user profiles, emails, accounts, passwords, favorites, bookmarks, wallpaper and other personalization
  • Programs, such as for example Microsoft Office (and Outlook for email), Google Chrome, Quickbooks, Adobe, and any other applications that you use on the old laptop

Let’s see how it is done.

How to transfer from HP / Lenovo to Dell laptop

  1. Run Zinstall WinWin on your old computer (the one you are transferring from).
Note: You can get Zinstall WinWin here, and its user guide here.
  2. Run Zinstall WinWin on the new Dell laptop
    1. You don’t need to do any configurations for the computers to connect – it’s automatic
    2. If the computers are already connected to same router, same Internet connection, or same wireless connection, you don’t need anything else
    3. If there is no way to get both computers online, you can still do the transfer, using Zinstall with USB drive. See here for transfer to new computer using USB external hard drive.
  3. If you’d like to select which applications and files you want to transfer, press the Advanced menu. If you just want to transfer everything, you don’t need to go to the Advanced menu.
  4. Press “Go” on the new Dell laptop to start the transfer

That’s it! Once the transfer is done, you will have all of your files, your profiles, accounts, and of course your programs – on your new Dell laptop. It’s that easy.

Is it OK to transfer from a different vendor (HP, Lenovo, etc) to a Dell?

Yes, it is. It’s true that different vendors use different hardware and slightly different system specifics. However, when you use a dedicated transfer software like in the tutorial above, it does not actually transfer those vendor-specific system components or the old Windows itself, so your new computer remains new and pristine, just with all of your stuff added to it.

Is it OK to transfer from desktop to laptop?

Of course! Desktops are laptops are actually not very different on the inside, laptop just use slightly smaller and more energy efficient hardware. But Windows, and all of your applications are files, work just the same on laptops and on desktops – so there is no problem to transfer from one to another.

You can do this even if your desktop and your laptop are made by different companies, and run different versions of Windows. For example, you can transfer from an HP Windows 10 desktop to a Dell Windows 11 laptop, or from a Lenovo Windows 7 desktop to a Dell Windows 11 laptop. Any combination is just fine.
